Mission Statement

The right music has the power to heal, to cleanse, and to uplift your entire being. Music cannot be interpreted or put into words, which goes to show its complex and intricate nature. Music can only be felt and in feeling, it gets translated into thoughts and emotions. It permeates your entire body like pure energy and touches you like nothing else can. It is no wonder that people have used music for rejuvenation, expression and as a healing mechanism throughout the ages.

For over one billion people, or 15% of the world’s population, attending a live music event is impossible due to lack of accessibility. Existing venue infrastructures barely meet the ADA compliance standards and even then, only accommodate those with mobility issues. They typically have a few seats in the front row and limit the number of companions to one or two.

We decided that just isn’t enough.

In 2018, the Shine Music non-profit was created so that we could breakdown the barriers that would prevent people with any disability from not only attending but enjoying the day as much as anyone else. It’s hard to imagine, but an event like the Shine Music Festival has never happened anywhere in the world…until now.

On August 8, 2021, the Shine Music Festival will be held at the Levitt Pavilion in Denver, CO. The large 14,000 capacity outdoor venue will allow us to adhere to any COVID health regulations required at the time of event. For over two years, the Shine team has worked with various organizations serving the disabled communities to create a space that would allow everyone to attend; a space where people of all abilities can come together and share in the amazing power of music. By not separating those with disabilities, we are breaking down barriers which will allow everyone to see that we are much more alike than we are different, and ultimately creating a more inclusive world.

The Team

There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.

Without question, live music is my happy place. The community it creates breaks all societal barriers and allows us to come together, despite our differences, and share in the magic that is uniquely created at every show.

Shawn Satterfield

Founder | President

I have been a lover of live music and festivals for decades. I enjoy all genres but mostly EDM because it is so upbeat and energizing. I’m currently living with Multiple Sclerosis and have been navigating festivals and concerts using a variety of assistive devices.

Music has played an especially important, positive role in my life, and I feel its benefits should be experienced by those of all abilities. I’m grateful to contribute my skills to help others enjoy something that has been so meaningful to me.

Diagnosed with Epilepsy in 1989, I am active in the disability community and co-founded the Epilepsy Alliance for Young Adults and Empowered Women With Epilepsy to help support others living with epilepsy. I have spent the past decade promoting the idea of inclusion and accessibility for people with disabilities through my work with Easterseals Colorado and the U.S. Department of Education.

Alexis Perlmutter

Community Engagement

Due to my disability, I have been an active advocate in disability awareness and accessibility. As an accomplished DJ with 5+ years of experience, I have provided music for a variety of events. Music is a huge part of our daily life; it brings people together, it is a motivator – it’s something that can inspire people to do and create amazing things, encourage them to reach their full potential, and chase their dreams.

Ethan Beaudoin

Event Production

I have been fortunate to experience the collective joy that music can bring to thousands of strangers who are moved by it at any given show – thousands singing the same lyrics at the top of their lungs or dancing so hard the world drops away. It is my honor to be a small part of giving that joy to those whose challenges can make it difficult for them to experience live music.

Erin Sands

Creative Director

Music has been at the foundation of my life, especially live music. Music has helped guide me through the good, the bad and the ugly. There is no better feeling than listening or seeing one of my favorite bands and getting goosebumps! I am passionate about all creative means, I believe it is a way for us to share a piece of ourselves.
